More of the population in Germany live in rented accommodation than in their own homes (a ratio of about 3:2). To find a property to rent or buy you can use an Estate Agent - der Immobilienmakler or just Makler (the tenant pays the agent's fees of about 2/3 months rent or about 6% of house price) who offer property or would search for a suitable property for you. Private deals can be found through newspapers or the Internet. Also ask friends and work colleagues if they are aware of any available properties.

Look in local newspapers (free ones are delivered at least once a week) or in the Frankfurter Rundschau, Immobilien Inserat, Wiesbadener Kurier or Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Internet sites include:

Frankfurter Rundschau
Scout 24
Immobilien-Navigator
Das Inserat
Immowelt

A good site with detailed explanations about renting and buying property in Germany, particularly in the
Frankfurt area and that is written in English can be found at Allgrund.
